The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that the RIAA has ringtones in their sights as their next target for "piracy." One piece of software that allows users to make their own ringtones (Xingtone) is of special interest to the music business lobby group. The RIAA fears that people will make ringtones out of pirated songs, compounding the file-sharing problem while robbing the music industry of a new source of revenue. Ringtones! Are they kidding. The next thing the RIAA will do is charge you for copyright infringement for whistling.
In a somewhat related story, the Register is reporting that the RIAA is trying to use its influence to get Apple to raise prices on iTunes. Apple is trying to fight the increase. Why can't these record companies just go ahead a die already! Go away. We don't need you or want you around any more. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way down.
