Picked up the latest Ryan Adams CD "Cold Roses" last week. It's been in my car CD player non-stop. A very solid effort and a welcome return to his alt-country roots. Like some of Ryan's other discs (and God knows he puts enough of them out) lyrically it can be a little disjointed (but personally, I have a tendency to enjoy that). Melodically and musically it's just as solid as it gets. The J. P. Bowersock guitar work ranges in influence from Phil Lesh to the twangy T. Bone Burnette induced sounds of Bruce Cockburn's records from 10 years ago. The Cindy Cashdollar steel fits into all the right places. "Stone Roses" is a must if alt-country and Americana floats your boat. You get the impression listening to "Cold Roses" that Ryan is the closest thing we have to Gram making records today, and that's a very, very good thing. Oh, and if you want to try before you buy, Ryan's craptastic Flash site lets you listen to the entire CD on-line, if you can figure out the maze to the songs. link
