Radio: Miracle of the 20th Century

by johnford on June 21, 2009

I got this old book as a combo Birthday/Father’s Day present. “: Miracle of the 20th Century,” was published in 1922, at the advent of the “modern era” of . Scanned in a few of the and cover so others (as in you) could check it out. A couple of my favorite picts are the “first” car and the “portable” suitcase . It’s interesting to read the pages of this book and realize that the enthusiasm for in the ’20s is much like the fervor of the Internet and digital wireless technologies today. In its infancy, the early broadcaster, adopters and hobbyists saw and telephony as a technology to enable men to “talk through space to people miles away.” The excitement of and its promise would be the harbinger of a new world of learning, communication and utopian ideals. A good reminder to not always “drink the kool-aid” of the so-called illuminated ones expounding the latest new technology that will change the world and lead us into a new mystical land of pink bunnies and dancing rainbow ponies.

New Delineator Recipes Cookbook

by johnford on June 10, 2009

One of the few things I have in my actual possession that belonged to my Dad is an old cookbook from the ’20s called the New Delineator Recipes. From what I can gather, it was created by the Delineator Home Institute back in the late 1920s and includes 10 exclusive recipes from Ann Batchelder. I’ll post some more of the recipes in due time, till then… here’s scans of the first chapter, “Quick Breads, Griddle Cakes and Waffles.”

I’ve moved up to round two in the Chronicle “Sound Wars” for my heart felt little love song, “I Knew I’d Hit Rock Bottom (When I Woke Up, On Top of You)” I did this without asking anyone to vote or pepper the poll in any way. However, now it’s time to get greedy! I am asking all of you, as my shills, to give my tune a listen and vote for ME! Vote early, vote often & vote now! Thank you. Link below. John Ford

Radio: Free, Simple and 24-7

by johnford on June 5, 2009

This morning, like pretty much every morning, I was noodling the web as usual looking for the latest news from around the Globe. Since RadioNX covers all the news, from across the world and around the corner (I feel like one of those old-timey news jingles should be playing in the background), I never, ever know what news I’m gonna’ whack into.

radio dialToday I landed on an op-ed piece from CityBeat. From what I can gather from my limited time I could give to the site, it’s an alternative paper from Cincinnati. The article, The Day the Music Died … Again?!, is a lamentation over the format change of a local Cinci station that recently flipped from Alternative to Country. The 20ish reporter gives us the usual angst of a 20-something, loosing her fave destination, along with the usual FUD-ish diatribe about this is why youngish people use an iPod instead of listening to the damn . All perfect and I guess valid points…But one thing she said really caught my eye:

“That’s why is so (potentially) great. It’s free. It’s simple. It’s there, 24/7″

Well whack me up side the head with the obvious stick! What was that really bad NAB “consumer focus” slogan? [click to continue…]

Radio & Records Closes Shop

by johnford on June 3, 2009

The broadcasting industry trade that set the standard for over three decades, & Records, ceases operation on Friday. It is indeed the end of an era. For those in the broadcasting industry & Records was much more than just bathroom reading material. It was the source for rumors, news along with the latest trends and ideas in . It was also the most coveted rag for finding a gig. The ‘newspaper’ would quickly exchange hands from the program director to the weekend overnight guy, quickly becoming a tattered beast and the most photocopied piece of print in the station. You could always tell when the station was about to change format…. the PD would leave it in the studio so everyone could find a new gig. Sad to see this old friend die. Here’s a screenshot of it’s last day of web publication.

That’s David Ross (I think) and Me in the Minny Mouse Tee in the WSHE studios. Check out the carts and the rack of LP”s behind me and the Cheap Trick and Bob Marley records on the wall.
