Radio heats up capitol hill.

Radio and Records is reporting that Senator John McCain and Clear Channel Chairman/CEO Lowery Mays faced off at this morning’s Senate hearing on consolidation in the radio industry. McCain even interrupted Mays on a couple of occasions to get a ‘yes or no’ answer out of the radio head honcho. One instance occurred when McCain was trying to find out if Clear Channel was planning to buy more radio stations. Musician Don Henley also got his shot in the spotlight with tales of music being banned from the radio conglomerate. Read more on the radio trade publication web site.

Radio consolidation reform bill introduced in Congress.

Billboard is reporting that Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) has reintroduced his Competition in Radio and Concert Industries Act. The bill is aimed at undoing the radio and concert promotion consolidation of the 90’s and loopholes in payola laws. Yahoo is introducing a paid on-line radio service.

The Register is reporting that Yahoo is launching a premium version of its Internet radio service. The paid version of LAUNCHcast includes 50 radio stations at a cost of about four dollars a month. This comes right on the heels of Yahoo settling a copyright infringement suit with Sony.
