I saw you last night

by johnford on September 20, 2004

I saw you last night
I’m sure it was you
After some more surgery
With another beau

At an Italian restaurant
On center street
You smiled politely
yet eyes never meet

You snuck out the back
Just behind the stairs
For another lie of blow
Then you gave me a stare

And when you came back
With an entrance so grand
You glanced at my daughter
What you might have had

You talked up the maid
And talked down the help
Sighed at your lover
And the hand you had dealt

I saw you last night
When you were all alone
That sad smile over your shoulder
And then I was gone

I Cried Like This

by johnford on September 11, 2004

Blues. I still haven’t gotten this worked out completely, but I had to record it so I wouldn’t forget it. Hats off to Lightnin’ Hopkins on this one.

mp3 –>> link

I spent the whole night long
thinkin on you
tossed and turned till morning
and nuthin’ ever seems to do
my tired bones ache
from cryin and dreaming over you

and I cried like this

lord knows I’ve tried to forget you
tear you from my troubled mind
dulled my achin’ heart
drinkin whiskey till I’m blind
but no matter how hard I try
i can’t leave you far behind

every night when I lay down
and close my weary eyes
when I set my head down
no matter how hard I try
it’s your face I see
till I fall asleep from cryin’

and I cry like this

I spent the whole night long
thinkin on you
tossed and turned till morning
and nuthin’ ever seems to do
my tired bones ache
from cryin and dreaming over you

and I cried like this

I believe it’s the 3rd song on the playlist

you are the place i’m heading
but i fear i’ll pass right through
i’d drive the lonesome valley
for ten minutes alone with you

i’m waiting on a ghost
who’s waiting on one too
in shadows light i dream tonight
for ten minutes alone with you

this world won’t stand long
whisper what you want to do
the curse of time won’t let me find
ten minutes alone with you

save my heart my darlin
before tenderness leaves it blue
the beating might cease but i still need
ten minutes more with you

ahead the dead will wander
soon we’ll wander too
but today my soul still hungers
for ten minutes alone with you

this world won’t stand long
whiper what you want to do
the curse of time won’t let me find
ten minutes alone with you

Hurricane Francis

by johnford on September 5, 2004

It’s Sunday, although there is no real way to tell what day it really is. It seems that we’ve been dealing with hurricane Francis since Thursday. The storm actually started to hit late Friday, and it’s now 2:30 on Sunday and the rain is still coming down. We’ve been without power now for about a day and a half. I cooked up everything I could find in the freezer, a bunch of chicken and frozen shrimp, on the barbie this morning, so we’ve got plenty to eat today.

There are some spotty areas around town where there is a restaurant or two open, but the lines to get into them are endless. Maybe tomorrow it will be a bit better. The biggest pain in the ass is the fact that because I live on the beach, if I head across the bridge into “greater Fort Lauderdale,” depending on who the cop is guarding the bridge on the way back, I might not be able to get back into my neighborhood. Pretty silly all and all, considering that there is no real damage, only power outages.

This hurricane, as far as Fort Lauderdale is concerned, is nothing more than a large, albeit endless, summer South Florida thunderstorm. Usually a hurricane blows by in a few hours, but this damn thing is so big that it’s just endless.

Boredom is starting to set in. I can see now that undoubtedly the best thing to do during a hurricane would be to get drunk and screw. I have the booze, but unfortunately no one to be the victim of the second part of the equation. I have a bottle of champagne in the fridge that is getting warmer by the minute, but what good is a bottle of champagne without someone to drink it with. A bottle of scotch or a six-pack of beer is acceptable on your own, but how does one drink a bottle of champagne by oneself? Sounds like a good song idea. And if you really think about it hard, maybe the best way to drink a bottle of champagne is by yourself. Maybe that’s the way it was meant to be drunk. Naked fingers gripping the bottle and drinking it right from the spout.

What I am really dreading is the passing of the storm. Right now I’ve got the doors open and even thought the humidity is making everything wilt in the house, at least it’s cool. Soon, maybe tomorrow, the skies will clear and the sun will start beating down and without air conditioning it’s just going to be farking brutal. This I dread.

Wrestling

by johnford on September 1, 2004

I do have to apologize about the lack of updates on the front of this site in the last few days. But I’ve had an interesting couple of days. I spent the other night doing something I have not done in quite a long time, wrestling with God. An event not to be taken lightly or undertaken by the feint of heart. I survived the evening mostly intact, but not without incident, and of course, God won. I never expected anything less, but sometimes you do have to grab on and not let go, even if you’re bound to loose.
